Microsoft ending support for Office 2016 for Mac
Introduction
Last year Microsoft announced the end of support for Office 2016 for Mac in October 2020 (End of support for Office 2016 for Mac).
This includes:
- All software updates and bug fixes
- All security patches and fixes
- All phone and chat technical support
- All support content and online help content
The final deadline for support will be October 13, 2020.
Options
If you currently utilise Office 2016 for Mac, it is strongly recommended you migrate to the current Microsoft Office 2019 for Mac offerings.
If your devices are O365 licensed (for example if your users need to log in with their Office 365 credentials to use the applications in the suite) any current and valid licenses should work for Office 2019 for Mac.
If your devices are Volume Licensed, you will need to use an updated Volume Licenser Package for Office 2019 for Mac. This is available from your Microsoft Licensing Portal.
Is there anything else I should know?
There is a change in the minimum support macOS version between Office 2016 for Mac and Office 2019 for Mac. With the release of macOS Catalina (October 2019), Office 2019 for Mac is only supported on macOS High Sierra (10.13), macOS Mojave (10.14) and macOS Catalina (10.15). As new major versions of macOS are released, Microsoft will drop support for the older macOS version to support the new release and the previous two versions of macOS (Microsoft OS requirements for Office 2019 for Mac and Microsoft 365 for Mac).
As a result you may also need to upgrade the macOS version on your client devices.
