The question has been raised by some of our clients about what happens when the 1/yr self-signed certificate expires on your Apple Configurator hosts…. well, the world does not end, nor do you need to re-supervise your iPads.

Certificate expiration will NOT cause an iOS device to lose the relationship with a Configurator instance. A Supervised iOS device has the normal paired relationship writing to /var/root/Library/Lockdown/pair_records, and the Configurator instance obtains the iOS escrow key as usual.

In summary – even if the certificate is marked as expired and the profile can be ‘deleted’ from the iOS device, supervision will remain.
